Keep Calm and Dance On

Music!
A simple song has the power to uplift, inspire, or motivate.

This page is dedicated to the music I listen to when I need a pick me up. I started out thinking I would just list a couple songs and, well… I think I’m over 50 now, but I just can’t stop adding more to the list! You can find all these songs and more on my playlist over at YouTube.

Would you like to share a song you find uplifting or inspirational? Comment below!

Oasis by GACKT

I’m starting with this song because it’s very special to me. I find it powerfully motivating and I play it repeatedly when I feel like I want to give up on everything.
This video is taken from his Sixth Day & Seventh Night Live Tour in 2004.
There are actually two songs in this clip. The first is not the song I’d like to share with you, though I do love it. The song I would like to share starts at 3:21. Feel free to skip right to the point. I tried to link with a time stamp, but it’s not working.   ToT
I used this particular video because it has decent English subtitles, so maybe you can get a feeling for the power this song holds for me. The thing with translations is that some people are better at it than others and words/phrases can mean several things. If you would like a second translation, you can find one here.

  • Tell Me – Wonder Girls
  • Pumped Up Kicks – Foster The People

Roly Poly by T-Ara.

This is not the official T-Ara music video. I chose this video because it’s a brilliant dance cover by Vietnamese dance group, Saint 319. They do dance covers for a lot of different songs and I find them not only great fun to dance to, but also a great cardio workout, especially if you do several back to back.

  • Lovey Dovey – T-Ara
  • Sail – Awolnation
  • Tesselate – Alt J

Follow Me Down to the Red Oak Tree by James Vincent McMorrow

Now, I would assume most people would find this song to be rather sad. In fact, I came across it in a sad movie.

Third Star is about a young man named James, who is dying of cancer. He and his 3 best friends go on a final camping trip to his favourite beach. Both this song and the movie are really sad, but they’re both inspirational and motivational for me. I first watched Third Star shortly after being diagnosed with an auto-immune disease. Whenever I get depressed about my diagnosis and need a reminder that it’s really not so bad; that I can still live a full and wonderful life, I watch this movie or listen to this song. It’s funny, how much its helped me.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

  • Hey Na Na – Katie Herzig
  • Fuyuu Yume – Origa (both Japanese and Russian versions)
  • Oh No – Marina and the Diamonds
  • Heart Sutra in Mandarin
  • Spectrum – Florence & the Machine

Night Melody by Origa

A cute little song that makes me smile. Great fun to “glide” around the house to.

  • Fortune Days – The Glitch Mob
  • Blinding – Florence & the Machine
  • Suerte (Whenever Wherever, Spanish) – Shakira
  • Undisclosed Desires – Muse
  • Baby I am Nobody Now – Andy Bull

Cello Suite No. 1 – Bach/Yo-Yo Ma

Classical music is great and I think this just may be my favourite piece. I have a thing for string instruments (saving up for an upright bass!!) so that may have something to do with it.

  • Midnight City – M83
  • Supermassive Black Hole – Muse
  • Can’t Nobody – 2NE1
  • A Boy – G-Dragon
  • Lilika – Origa

Cube by GACKT

I thought it would be interesting to end with a GACKT song since I started with one.

GACKT is one of the more motivating artists I listen to. He reignited my love for Japanese culture and inspired me to stop wishing I could speak Japanese and actually try to learn it.

This song makes me want to spin in a circles while I blast it from my iPod radio.

As with the first, this video has an English translation in it. I don’t know how well it was translated there so please, if you’re interested, go and read this translation. I’ve relied on her translations many a time and I feel she has a good grasp of what shes doing.
